From Flight Crews to First Responders: Bridging Sleep, Nutrition & Restorative Environments
Meet Andrea Perchotte, educator, Registered Holistic Nutritionist, Certified Health Coach, writer, former flight attendant, and graduate of the International Parenting & Health Institute’s Integrative Adult Sleep Coach Certification Program.
Based in British Columbia, Canada, Andrea brings together an unusually diverse professional background spanning education, aviation, travel, holistic nutrition, health coaching, sleep, interior design, writing, and wellness environments.
Yet there is a surprisingly consistent thread running through it all:
How do our lifestyles and environments influence how well we feel, function, recover—and sleep?
For Andrea, that question is also personal.
Before studying adult sleep professionally, she spent nearly five years working as a flight attendant—experiencing firsthand the irregular schedules, changing environments, travel demands, and disrupted sleep opportunities that can accompany aviation work.
Years later, when Andrea came to IPHI to study integrative adult sleep, she already knew one of the populations she hoped to support:
shift workers.
Flight crews.
Paramedics.
Engineers.
And others whose professions don’t always operate according to a traditional daytime schedule.
Today, Andrea’s professional journey provides a compelling example of what can happen when sleep education is integrated into an already multidisciplinary understanding of health and wellbeing.
From the Skies to Sleep
Andrea’s connection to sleep began long before she formally studied it.
Her professional history includes nearly five years as a flight attendant with Air Canada, an experience that gave her firsthand exposure to the realities of working and traveling across changing schedules and environments.
She has traveled extensively across six continents and has worked within aviation, travel, tourism and education.
Interestingly, Andrea was publicly writing and teaching about sleep-related topics years before becoming an Integrative Adult Sleep Coach.
In a 2007 article titled “Snooze Control,” Andrea drew upon her years as a flight attendant and the experience of trying to sleep in hotels while traveling.
By 2010, she was also teaching travel education that addressed topics including jet lag and sleeping well while traveling.
Sleep, in other words, wasn’t a completely new interest when Andrea eventually arrived at IPHI.
It was a subject she had already experienced personally and explored professionally.
Her IPHI education allowed her to go deeper.
Becoming an Integrative Adult Sleep Coach
Andrea enrolled in the International Parenting & Health Institute’s Integrative Adult Sleep Coach Certification Program with a clear purpose.
She wanted to expand the knowledge she could offer clients—particularly people whose occupations create unique challenges around sleep.
As Andrea explained when entering the program:
“I’d like to gain knowledge that I can pass on to my clients, many of whom will be shift workers…”
She specifically identified flight crews, paramedics and engineers among the populations she envisioned supporting.
That intention is particularly meaningful when viewed alongside the professional work she later pursued.
Andrea successfully completed the program and became an IPHI Integrative Adult Sleep Coach graduate, adding adult sleep education to an already substantial foundation in nutrition, health coaching and education.
Her professional education includes:
Bachelor of Education with Distinction
University of Alberta
Registered Holistic Nutritionist
Holistic Nutrition & Health Coaching Diploma
Advanced Holistic Nutrition Diploma
NutraPhoria School of Holistic Nutrition
Certified Health Coach
Dr. Sears Wellness Institute
Integrative Adult Sleep Coach
International Parenting & Health Institute
She also pursued education in interior design and holds an honours degree in Japanese Studies, reflecting the unusually interdisciplinary nature of her professional background.
Looking at Sleep Through an Integrative Lens
Andrea’s combination of sleep, nutrition, health coaching and education makes particular sense within an integrative approach.
Sleep doesn’t occur separately from the rest of our lives.
Our daily schedules matter.
Nutrition matters.
Movement matters.
Light exposure matters.
Stress matters.
Our physical environment matters.
Work demands matter.
And for people working irregular schedules, the relationship between these factors can become even more complex.
A traditional sleep recommendation may not translate neatly into the life of someone working overnight, crossing time zones, responding to emergencies, or sleeping at unconventional hours.
Andrea’s own professional history gave her an unusual perspective from which to understand that reality.
She didn’t have to imagine what it was like to work outside a conventional schedule.
She had lived it.
From Flight Crews to First Responders
One of the most compelling parts of Andrea’s story is what happened after she expressed her desire to better support shift workers.
Her more recent professional writing has included wellness topics specifically relevant to firefighters, paramedics and first responders.
Her published work has explored subjects such as:
sleep and bedding for firefighters,
restorative and wellness spaces for first responders,
and
retreat environments designed for paramedics and others who serve in demanding professions.
Her portfolio includes work for publications such as Canadian Firefighter Magazine and Canadian Paramedicine.
One 2025 article explored how thoughtfully designed wellness spaces can help first responders access more effective opportunities for coping and restoration.
Another addressed bedding choices and sleep for firefighters.
And her work for Canadian Paramedicine examined retreats serving people whose professions revolve around caring for and responding to others.
The connection to what Andrea told IPHI when she began her sleep education is striking.
She wanted to better understand sleep so she could share that knowledge with people such as:
flight crews and paramedics.
Years later, those populations appear directly within her professional writing.
When the Environment Becomes Part of Wellness
Andrea’s professional development also took an interesting turn into the physical environments in which people live, work and recover.
With additional education in interior design, Andrea began exploring the relationship between physical space and wellbeing.
Her recent professional work has included writing and education surrounding restorative environments and wellness spaces, particularly for populations experiencing demanding working conditions.
This adds another dimension to her integrative approach.
A bedroom isn’t merely a place containing a bed.
A workplace recovery room isn’t simply an unused room with a chair.
The environments surrounding us can influence light exposure, noise, stimulation, comfort, opportunities for relaxation, and the behaviors we associate with rest and recovery.
Andrea has also taught community education about creating healthier homes, including considerations for more sleep-supportive bedrooms and nourishing kitchens.
In this way, her work brings another question into the sleep conversation:
How can the spaces surrounding us better support wellbeing?
Sleep, Nutrition & Environment
Andrea’s professional path ultimately brings together three particularly important areas:
Sleep.
Nutrition.
Environment.
Her training as a Registered Holistic Nutritionist and Certified Health Coach gives her a broader wellness foundation from which to understand lifestyle.
Her education as an Integrative Adult Sleep Coach adds sleep physiology, assessment and integrative sleep support.
Her education and interest in interior environments add another piece of the puzzle:
the places in which our daily lives actually happen.
Rather than viewing these as isolated specialties, Andrea’s career demonstrates how they can intersect.
For someone working shifts, for example, sleep may be influenced not only by their work schedule but also by meal timing, light exposure, opportunities for movement and recovery, stress, family responsibilities, and the environment available when it is finally time to rest.
This is precisely why an integrative perspective can be so valuable.
An Educator at Heart
There is another thread connecting nearly every stage of Andrea’s career:
education.
Andrea holds a Bachelor of Education with Distinction from the University of Alberta, and education has remained central even as the subjects she teaches have changed.
Whether discussing travel, nutrition, health, sleep, healthier homes, or restorative environments, Andrea has repeatedly taken information she has learned and translated it for other people.
That aligns beautifully with what she originally said when entering IPHI’s adult sleep program:
She wanted to gain knowledge she could pass on to her clients.
Not simply collect another credential.
Learn.
Integrate.
And teach.
A Multidisciplinary Professional Journey
Andrea’s career does not fit neatly inside a single professional box.
And that may be one of its greatest strengths.
Her experiences span:
Aviation
Travel
Education
Holistic Nutrition
Health Coaching
Adult Sleep
Interior Design
Writing
Wellness Environments
At first glance, those fields might seem unrelated.
Look closer, however, and a common theme emerges.
They all involve the environments, behaviors and circumstances through which people experience everyday life.
And increasingly, Andrea has explored what those factors mean for people working in professions where rest and recovery can be especially challenging.

From Personal Experience to Professional Education
Andrea’s story illustrates something we frequently emphasize at IPHI:
Professional education becomes particularly meaningful when someone can connect it to the people and problems they genuinely care about.
Andrea understood irregular schedules because she had lived them.
She understood education because she was trained to teach.
She expanded into nutrition and health coaching to better understand lifestyle and wellbeing.
She studied adult sleep to deepen her ability to support clients—including the shift workers she specifically hoped to reach.
And her subsequent writing has brought those interests directly into conversations surrounding firefighters, paramedics and other professionals whose demanding work can make rest and recovery especially important.
What began partly through personal experience as a flight attendant eventually became something Andrea could study, integrate and share with others.
From flight crews to first responders, Andrea’s journey demonstrates how sleep education can travel far beyond the bedroom.
It can become part of a much larger conversation about how people work, eat, travel, recover, live and create environments that support their wellbeing.
💙 Congratulations, Andrea!
