25 Years of Whole-Person Care: Integrating Mental Health, Nervous System Regulation & Sleep
Meet Lenore Jeanne Shepard, LICSW, NBC-HWC, a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker, National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach, integrative sleep specialist, CBT-I practitioner, EFT practitioner, Reiki practitioner, and Holistic Science of Sleep Method™ Coach.
Celebrating 25 years as a social worker, Lenore brings decades of experience in mental health and whole-person wellness to her expanding work in integrative sleep. She is currently furthering her professional education through IPHI’s Integrative Adult Sleep Coach Certification Program, building upon an already extensive foundation in psychotherapy, behavioral sleep support, health coaching, mindfulness, and mind-body approaches.
Through her practice, Sleep Well Now, Lenore helps individuals uncover the underlying factors contributing to persistent sleep challenges rather than focusing exclusively on nighttime symptoms.
A 25-Year Foundation in Mental Health
Lenore’s professional journey began in social work.
She earned her Master of Social Work (MSW) from the Wurzweiler School of Social Work in 2001 and has spent the past 25 years working within mental health and wellness. Today, she is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker in Massachusetts and also holds LCSW credentials.
Her therapeutic work has supported individuals navigating concerns including anxiety, depression, trauma, burnout, chronic illness, insomnia, stress, relationship challenges, life transitions, self-esteem, and women’s health issues.
Rather than viewing emotional and physical wellbeing as separate experiences, Lenore’s philosophy recognizes the interconnected nature of the mind, body, emotions, lifestyle, and nervous system.
That philosophy would eventually become especially relevant to her work with sleep.
Expanding From Psychotherapy Into Whole-Person Wellness
Lenore continued broadening her professional foundation beyond clinical social work.
She studied health coaching through the Institute for Integrative Nutrition and became a National Board Certified Health & Wellness Coach (NBC-HWC). Her professional education has allowed her to bring health behavior change and lifestyle support into a background already grounded in mental health and psychotherapy.
Her therapeutic and wellness toolkit has continued to grow and includes approaches such as:
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I)
- Mindfulness-based approaches
- Motivational Interviewing
- Psychodynamic therapy
- Solution-Focused Brief Therapy
- Strength-Based Therapy
- Compassion-focused approaches
- Somatic approaches
- Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)
- Reiki
- Health and wellness coaching
Together, these modalities have shaped an approach that is deeply individualized rather than confined to a single therapeutic framework.
When Mental Health and Sleep Intersect
Sleep is one of the clearest examples of why Lenore’s multidisciplinary background matters.
Insomnia and persistent sleep difficulties rarely occur independently of the rest of a person’s life.
Lenore’s work recognizes that sleep challenges can involve combinations of psychological, biological, physical, behavioral, emotional, and lifestyle factors. Her website specifically discusses influences ranging from stress and anxiety to trauma, hormones, menopause, medical concerns, inflammation, gut health, medications, food sensitivities, and sleep apnea.
Through Sleep Well Now, she works with people experiencing insomnia and chronic sleep challenges using a personalized, integrative mind-body approach designed to look beyond the symptom of “not sleeping” and explore what may be contributing to the problem.
Looking Beyond the Night
One of the central ideas behind Lenore’s work is that better sleep does not begin only when someone gets into bed.
Her website emphasizes the relationship between daytime experiences and nighttime sleep, as well as the importance of nervous-system regulation.
For Lenore, addressing sleep can therefore involve understanding what is happening throughout the person’s entire day—and within their broader physical and emotional life.
This perspective naturally complements her decades of experience as a clinical social worker.
Someone struggling with sleep may simultaneously be navigating stress, grief, trauma, anxiety, burnout, chronic illness, relationship difficulties, hormonal changes, or major life transitions.
Understanding that larger context allows sleep to be approached as part of the whole person, rather than an isolated nighttime behavior.
Deepening Her Work Through Integrative Sleep Education
Even with decades of professional experience and existing training in CBT-I, Lenore chose to continue expanding her sleep education through the International Parenting & Health Institute.
She is currently studying through IPHI’s Integrative Adult Sleep Coach Certification Program and incorporates the Holistic Science of Sleep Method™ into her professional identity.
That decision is significant.
CBT-I gives Lenore an established behavioral and cognitive framework for insomnia. Her integrative sleep education allows her to widen the lens further, exploring the interconnected systems and circumstances that can contribute to sleep challenges.
Rather than treating one approach as the answer for every individual, her evolving work reflects the importance of asking:
What is contributing to this particular person’s sleep difficulties?
That individualized question sits at the heart of both Lenore’s therapeutic philosophy and IPHI’s holistic approach to sleep.
Sleep Well Now
Today, Lenore brings these disciplines together through Sleep Well Now, where she identifies herself as a heart-centered Integrative Sleep Specialist.
Her work is particularly focused on helping exhausted, high-achieving individuals experiencing insomnia and persistent sleep challenges uncover potential underlying contributors and develop a personalized path toward healthier sleep.
Based in the Boston area, Lenore works with individuals both in person and virtually.
Her work represents the culmination of decades spent studying and supporting human wellbeing across mental health, behavior change, stress, lifestyle, mind-body practices, and now integrative sleep.

Celebrating 25 Years and Continuing to Grow
There is something particularly meaningful about a professional who continues learning after 25 years of supporting others.
Lenore’s journey demonstrates that professional growth does not require abandoning the expertise we already possess. Sometimes it means expanding it, connecting disciplines that were once treated separately and developing a deeper understanding of how they influence one another.
Mental health. Nervous-system regulation. Behavior. Lifestyle. Physical wellbeing. Sleep.
Lenore’s career increasingly brings these pieces together.
