Bridging Functional Nutrition, Behavioral Science & Holistic Pre-Postnatal Wellness

Karen Firestone, Functional Nutrition, Holistic Pre-Postnatal Nutrition CoachMeet Karen Firestone, B.A., C.B.S., C.F.N.C., a Certified Functional Nutrition Counselor, Certified Behavior Specialist, founder of Sana Sana, and mother of three whose professional work brings together functional nutrition, behavioral science, microbiome health, lifestyle support, and women’s wellness.

Karen also works as a nutrition professional within SimiCare Medical Group in Simi Valley, California, where she is part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team supporting patients across a range of health and wellness concerns.

With an academic foundation in psychology from UCLA and extensive experience in child development and behavioral therapy, Karen brings a distinctive perspective to functional nutrition: understanding that knowing what supports health and actually creating sustainable change are two different things.

Today, Karen is expanding this foundation through her participation in the International Parenting & Health Institute’s Holistic Pre-Postnatal Nutrition Coach Certification Program, deepening an area of her work that is particularly meaningful to her—supporting women through fertility, pregnancy, postpartum, and motherhood.

Where Psychology, Behavior & Nutrition Meet

Karen’s professional foundation began with psychology.

She earned her psychology degree from UCLA and developed an extensive background in child development and behavioral therapy before moving more deeply into functional nutrition.

That behavioral background continues to influence the way she works today.

Nutrition recommendations may look straightforward on paper, but real life is considerably more complex.

Food choices exist within habits, stress, family responsibilities, access, preferences, emotions, routines, beliefs, and competing demands.

For Karen, sustainable wellness therefore involves more than telling someone what to eat.

It means helping people understand their individual needs while developing realistic strategies for incorporating healthier choices into everyday life.

Her background in behavioral science allows her to bring principles of habit formation and behavior change into nutrition counseling—helping clients explore not only what may support their goals, but also how those changes can become sustainable.

A Personal Journey Into Functional Nutrition

Karen’s interest in functional nutrition is also deeply personal.

For nearly two decades, she has used therapeutic diet and lifestyle strategies in navigating her own health experiences.

Over the years, her personal exploration of nutrition expanded to include concerns related to perimenopause, sleep, weight, and blood-sugar balance.

Experiencing the impact that nutrition and lifestyle changes could have in her own life ultimately inspired Karen to help others develop a greater understanding of their bodies and individual health needs.

That journey contributed to the philosophy she brings to her work today:

health needs a strong foundation.

Rather than viewing symptoms in isolation, Karen’s approach seeks to understand the larger nutrition and lifestyle picture surrounding an individual’s concerns.

Sana Sana: Simple Actions for Natural Alignment

Karen is the founder of Sana Sana, her functional nutrition counseling practice.

The name reflects the philosophy behind her work. “Sana” means “heal” in Spanish, while Karen uses SANA as an expression of Simple Actions for Natural Alignment.

Through Sana Sana, Karen provides personalized functional nutrition and lifestyle guidance designed to help clients better understand their bodies, health patterns, and individual needs.

Her work includes personalized nutrition counseling, therapeutic diet guidance, microbiome testing, pantry and grocery consulting, and targeted wellness programs.

A central component of Karen’s approach is empowerment.

Rather than positioning the practitioner as the sole authority over someone’s health experience, she wants clients to develop enough understanding of their own bodies to participate confidently in decisions affecting their wellness.

Exploring the Microbiome

Gut and microbiome health are another significant part of Karen’s professional work.

Through Sana Sana, she incorporates microbiome testing into individualized nutrition support, using results alongside a person’s health history, symptoms, diet, lifestyle, and goals to inform personalized recommendations.

For Karen, this area has particular relevance to women’s and maternal health.

Her personal experiences with conception, pregnancy, motherhood, and infant health strengthened her interest in how nourishment—and particularly gut health—can intersect with the well-being of both mother and child.

Those experiences now inform an important part of her professional mission: giving women access to education and support she wishes she had during her own journey.

Supporting Women Through Fertility, Pregnancy & Postpartum

Karen’s growing focus on maternal nutrition is deeply connected to her experience as a mother of three.

Having personally navigated the ups and downs of conception, pregnancy, and infant health, she understands how overwhelming these stages can feel—and how many questions women may have about nourishment along the way.

Fertility, pregnancy, birth recovery, lactation, postpartum depletion, hormonal changes, sleep disruption, changing nutritional needs, and the demands of caring for a baby can create an extraordinarily complex season of life.

Nutrition during these stages deserves nuance.

It also requires recognizing that no single food, supplement, diet, or protocol can replace individualized healthcare.

Karen’s goal is to help women become more informed and confident about nourishment while respecting their individual circumstances and working appropriately alongside the healthcare professionals involved in their care.

Expanding Through Holistic Pre-Postnatal Nutrition Education

Karen is currently participating in IPHI’s Holistic Pre-Postnatal Nutrition Coach Certification Program.

This education represents a natural expansion of work she is already passionate about.

Her existing foundation includes:

functional nutrition
behavioral science
psychology
child development
microbiome health
women’s wellness
habit change
and motherhood.

Her continuing pre-postnatal nutrition education adds another specialized lens through which these areas can be considered during fertility, pregnancy, postpartum, and the transition into motherhood.

A holistic perspective recognizes that maternal nutrition does not exist separately from the rest of a woman’s experience.

Sleep, stress, emotional well-being, digestion, physical activity, environment, relationships, cultural influences, food access, health history, lifestyle, and the enormous practical demands of motherhood can all shape nourishment.

This is where Karen’s combined background becomes particularly relevant.

Nutrition Within a Multidisciplinary Medical Setting

Karen’s work also extends beyond her independent practice.

She is part of the professional team at SimiCare Medical Group in Simi Valley, California.

Within this multidisciplinary setting, Karen provides nutrition expertise alongside medical and mental-health professionals.

Her professional profile identifies areas of focus that include autoimmune conditions, chronic illness, sleep disturbances, weight management, food allergies and sensitivities, diabetes, and specialized diets.

Her behavioral background also plays an important role here.

Understanding nutrition recommendations is only one piece of long-term change. Karen’s knowledge of behavioral principles allows her to help people examine habits, identify barriers, and develop strategies intended to make health-supportive behaviors more sustainable.

Working within a multidisciplinary environment also reinforces an important principle of holistic care:

collaboration matters.

Nutrition professionals are one part of a larger healthcare picture, and knowing when concerns require medical evaluation or collaboration with another appropriately qualified professional is essential.

Understanding the Whole Woman

One of the strongest threads running through Karen’s work is the desire to look beyond an isolated symptom.

A woman experiencing fatigue during motherhood may simultaneously be navigating interrupted sleep, inadequate nourishment, stress, hormonal changes, feeding responsibilities, emotional demands, limited time, and an entirely different daily routine.

A woman preparing for pregnancy may have a very different set of nutritional, emotional, lifestyle, and medical considerations.

And postpartum recovery does not happen independently of the realities of caring for a newborn.

Looking at the whole woman allows the conversation around nutrition to become more individualized and compassionate.

It also moves away from perfection.

The goal is not to create a “perfect” pregnancy diet or a flawless wellness routine.

The goal is to help women understand their needs, build supportive foundations, and make informed choices within the realities of their lives.

From Knowledge to Sustainable Change

Karen’s combination of functional nutrition and behavioral science gives her professional journey an especially valuable theme:

Knowledge matters, but knowledge must be translated into everyday life.

Knowing which foods may support an individual’s needs does little good if the recommendations are impossible to maintain.

Understanding gut health matters, but so does understanding the person whose life surrounds those recommendations.

And supporting maternal wellness requires considering the mother herself—not simply pregnancy outcomes or the needs of the baby.

As Karen continues through IPHI’s Holistic Pre-Postnatal Nutrition Coach Certification Program, she is expanding an already multidisciplinary foundation into a deeper understanding of nourishment throughout one of the most physiologically and emotionally dynamic periods of a woman’s life.

Her work reflects a larger vision of wellness built around education, individualized support, sustainable behavior change, and respect for the whole person.
