Bridging Adolescent Mental Health, Art Psychotherapy & Holistic Sleep Across the Lifespan
Meet Chiao Peng, an Art Psychotherapist and School Counsellor in Hong Kong expanding her expertise in teen sleep and adult sleep through IPHI’s Holistic Children & Teen Sleep Coach and Integrative Adult Sleep Coach programs.
Chiao Peng brings together her experience as an Art Psychotherapist and School Counsellor with a growing professional focus on teen sleep and adult sleep. Her multidisciplinary background in adolescent mental health, counselling, art psychotherapy and student wellbeing provides a strong foundation as she expands her education into holistic and integrative sleep support.
For more than seven years, Chiao has worked within international education settings, supporting the emotional health, development and wellbeing of young people. Her professional journey has taken her across multiple countries and educational environments, with experience connected to Hong Kong, mainland China, Taiwan and the United Kingdom. Her current public professional profile identifies her with Stamford American School Hong Kong.
With an academic foundation in Educational Psychology and Counselling and a master’s-level education in Art Psychotherapy, Chiao brings together psychology, creativity, communication and student wellbeing in her work with adolescents.
Now, she is adding another important dimension to that foundation through the International Parenting & Health Institute.
Chiao is currently participating in both IPHI’s Integrative Adult Sleep Coach Certification Program and Holistic Children & Teen Sleep Coach Certification Program, expanding her professional understanding of sleep across adolescence and adulthood.
For a professional whose career has centered on emotional wellbeing, mental health and supporting teenagers, the connection is particularly meaningful.
A Foundation in Educational Psychology & Counselling
Chiao’s professional journey began with an academic foundation focused on understanding how people learn, develop and navigate emotional and psychological challenges.
She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Educational Psychology and Counselling, providing a foundation in the psychological, developmental and interpersonal dimensions of education.
She later pursued a Master’s degree in Art Psychotherapy, becoming a qualified Art Psychotherapist.
Her public LinkedIn profile confirms study at Queen Margaret University from 2016–2018, consistent with the period of her advanced art psychotherapy education.
Together, educational psychology, counselling and art psychotherapy created a multidisciplinary foundation for Chiao’s subsequent work supporting children and adolescents.
The Role of Art Psychotherapy
For some young people, expressing complex emotions through words can be difficult.
Art psychotherapy offers another avenue for exploration and communication, using the creative process within a therapeutic relationship to help individuals explore thoughts, experiences and emotions.
For Chiao, this background adds another layer to her work with young people.
Rather than viewing a student only through academic performance or observable behavior, her professional education encourages curiosity about the emotional experiences occurring beneath the surface.
That perspective has particular relevance during adolescence: a developmental period marked by significant physical, neurological, social and emotional change.
More Than Seven Years in International Education
Chiao describes herself publicly as an experienced school counsellor with more than seven years in international education settings.
Her professional experience spans multiple international environments, with her LinkedIn history showing connections to Hong Kong, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Taiwan, Edinburgh and Glasgow.
Today, she is affiliated with Stamford American School Hong Kong, where an independent organizational directory identifies her as a School Counsellor within its Counseling Services team.
Working within international schools can add unique dimensions to student wellbeing.
Young people may be navigating not only the typical challenges of adolescence, but also cultural transitions, changing schools, academic expectations, identity development, family circumstances and international moves.
A counsellor working within these environments therefore has an opportunity to see adolescent wellbeing from a particularly broad perspective.
Supporting Teen Mental Health & Wellbeing
Chiao’s professional development continues to reflect her commitment to student wellbeing.
Her public professional profile includes additional education in:
Children’s Mental Wellbeing for International Schools
and
Child Protection Refresher for International Schools, both issued through Tes in January 2024.
These areas complement her background in counselling and psychotherapy and reinforce the central theme running throughout her professional career:
supporting young people’s emotional and developmental wellbeing.
And that is precisely where sleep becomes increasingly relevant.
Adding Sleep to the Adolescent Wellbeing Conversation
Sleep doesn’t exist separately from the rest of a teenager’s life.
Adolescents are navigating changes in biological sleep timing alongside academic demands, technology and social media, relationships, identity, family dynamics, extracurricular activities and emotional challenges.
For a school counsellor and Art Psychotherapist, expanding professional education into sleep creates another lens through which adolescent wellbeing can be explored.
Chiao is currently participating in IPHI’s Holistic Children & Teen Sleep Coach Certification Program, which expands beyond basic sleep hygiene to examine sleep within the broader realities of childhood and adolescence.
The program explores factors that may intersect with sleep during these developmental years, including emotional wellbeing, family dynamics, school pressures, technology use, social challenges, self-esteem, bullying and other aspects of children’s and teenagers’ everyday lives.
This makes the training especially complementary to Chiao’s established professional background.
Extending the Sleep Lens Into Adulthood
Chiao is simultaneously expanding her education through IPHI’s Integrative Adult Sleep Coach Certification Program.
That creates another interesting dimension to her professional development.
Adolescence doesn’t exist in isolation from adulthood.
The patterns, coping strategies, stress responses and health behaviors developed during the teenage years can continue evolving as individuals enter university, work, relationships and adult life.
Similarly, the adults surrounding teenagers: parents, caregivers, educators and professionals have their own sleep and wellbeing needs.
By studying both children and teen sleep and adult sleep, Chiao is developing a broader lifespan perspective.
Rather than understanding sleep only within one age group, she can explore how sleep needs and influencing factors evolve through different developmental stages.
Where Mental Health & Sleep Meet
Chiao’s professional journey illustrates an important principle of holistic practice:
We don’t experience emotional wellbeing, physical health and sleep as completely separate systems.
Stress can affect sleep.
Sleep disruption can affect emotional regulation.
School demands can influence routines.
Relationships and family dynamics can affect wellbeing.
Technology can influence both emotional experiences and sleep patterns.
And mental health concerns can coexist with sleep challenges in complex ways.
That doesn’t mean every sleep concern has a psychological cause or that sleep alone explains emotional difficulties.
It means professionals benefit from understanding the broader picture and recognizing when interdisciplinary collaboration or referral is appropriate.
Chiao’s education in psychology, counselling, psychotherapy, student wellbeing and sleep positions her to approach that bigger picture with curiosity.
A Truly International Professional Perspective
Another distinctive aspect of Chiao’s career is its international nature.
Her education and professional experience have crossed cultures and geographic boundaries, exposing her to different educational systems, family experiences and student populations.
Today, that journey continues in Hong Kong.
Her expanding professional education through IPHI adds another international layer, connecting her with a global community of professionals exploring sleep through integrative and holistic frameworks.
The result is a professional identity that brings together:
Educational Psychology
Counselling
Art Psychotherapy
Adolescent Mental Health
Student Wellbeing
International Education
Children & Teen Sleep
Adult Sleep
These aren’t isolated interests.
Together, they reflect a growing whole-person approach to wellbeing across developmental stages.

Recognizing Chiao’s Professional Growth
We are proud to recognize Chiao Peng as part of the International Parenting & Health Institute’s Professional Spotlight series.
With more than seven years of experience in international education, a foundation in educational psychology and counselling, advanced education in art psychotherapy, and extensive experience supporting teenagers, Chiao already brings a rich multidisciplinary perspective to her work.
Her decision to expand into both children and teen sleep and integrative adult sleep represents a natural evolution of that work.
Mental health matters.
Emotional expression matters.
Relationships matter.
Environment matters.
And sleep matters.
Understanding how those pieces can interact allows professionals to remain curious about the whole person rather than reducing a complex human experience to one symptom or behavior.
We are delighted to have Chiao participating in IPHI’s Integrative Adult Sleep Coach and Holistic Children & Teen Sleep Coach Certification Programs and look forward to seeing how she continues integrating these areas into her work supporting wellbeing.
