The History and Origins of Holistic Sleep Coaching and Consulting Certification Programs
Sleep has long been recognized as one of the foundational pillars of health and well-being. Yet the professions of sleep coaching and sleep consulting and the educational programs designed to train professionals in these fields are relatively new when compared to many other health and wellness professions.
Over the past two decades, sleep coach certification programs have evolved significantly, expanding from primarily behavioral-based approaches to include holistic, integrative, and multidisciplinary models that examine the many factors influencing healthy sleep.
The development of holistic sleep consultant education emerged from a growing recognition that sleep is influenced by far more than bedtime routines and sleep habits alone. Factors such as child development, emotional well-being, nutrition, family dynamics, environmental influences, lifestyle habits, stress, and overall health all play important roles in healthy sleep.
The Beginning of Holistic Sleep Consultant Education
When Mar De Carlo founded the International Maternity Institute (IMI) in 2009, she brought with her nearly three decades of experience in health, wellness, coaching, education, and holistic health practices.
As she began working with families and professionals, she identified what she believed was a significant gap within the emerging sleep consultant profession. While many professionals were discussing sleep through behavioral frameworks, there was limited formal education available that explored the broader developmental, emotional, environmental, nutritional, and lifestyle factors that influence sleep.
Although holistic approaches to supporting sleep had existed informally for many years, there was no widely recognized professional certification program dedicated to training practitioners through a comprehensive holistic framework. There was also little emphasis on examining sleep through the lens of pregnancy and early development.
In response to this need, IMI launched the world’s first Holistic Pregnancy & Child Sleep Consultant Certification program in 2011. The program was developed to provide professionals with a broader understanding of sleep and to explore the many interconnected factors that may influence sleep outcomes for children and families.
Why These Programs Were Developed
The Holistic Pregnancy & Child Sleep Consultant Certification program was created to address what many professionals viewed as missing from traditional sleep education at the time.
The curriculum introduced a multidisciplinary perspective that encouraged practitioners to examine sleep through multiple lenses, including:
- Child development
- Family dynamics
- Emotional well-being
- Environmental influences
- Nutrition
- Health and wellness considerations
- Lifestyle factors
- Prenatal and birth experiences
The goal was to provide professionals with a more comprehensive framework for understanding sleep and supporting families.
Influence on the Evolution of Holistic Sleep Education
As holistic sleep education continued to gain recognition, the influence of Mar De Carlo’s educational models extended beyond individual consulting practices. Through the introduction of topics such as child development, family dynamics, nutrition, environmental influences, prenatal and birth experiences, emotional well-being, and other multidisciplinary concepts, the programs helped broaden how many professionals approached sleep support.
At a time when many sleep education models focused primarily on behavioral interventions, these programs encouraged practitioners to consider a wider range of factors that may influence sleep and overall family well-being. This expanded perspective contributed to the ongoing evolution of holistic sleep education and professional sleep support.
Over the years, some graduates of IPHI went on to develop their own educational offerings, certification programs, and professional training initiatives. In doing so, they contributed to the continued growth and diversification of the sleep consulting profession while building upon concepts and perspectives introduced through their education and training.
As the profession matured, many of the multidisciplinary topics that were once rarely discussed within sleep consultant education became increasingly recognized as important areas of consideration when supporting children, adults, and families experiencing sleep challenges.
Expansion into Adult Sleep Education
As awareness of sleep’s role in overall health continued to grow, additional gaps within professional sleep education became apparent.
In 2015, the Integrative Adult Sleep Coach Certification program was launched to address the growing demand for education focused on adult sleep health. The program explored sleep through a multidisciplinary framework that included sleep science, stress, circadian rhythms, lifestyle habits, nutrition, wellness, and overall health.
This expansion reflected a broader understanding that sleep challenges occur across the lifespan and that adults often require support that extends beyond conventional sleep advice.
Historical Timeline
Before 2000
Sleep guidance was primarily provided through healthcare professionals, parenting educators, books, and informal family support systems. Formal sleep consultant certification programs were largely unavailable.
Early 2000s
The modern sleep consulting profession began gaining visibility. Early training programs focused primarily on behavioral sleep methodologies and structured sleep-training approaches.
2009
Mar De Carlo founded the International Maternity Institute (IMI) to provide professional education for individuals supporting families through pregnancy, birth, parenting, health, and wellness.
2011
The Holistic Pregnancy & Child Sleep Consultant Certification program was launched through IMI. The curriculum introduced a comprehensive framework that examined sleep through developmental, emotional, environmental, nutritional, and lifestyle perspectives while beginning the conversation during pregnancy rather than after sleep challenges emerged.
2011
Mar De Carlo founded the Association of Professional Sleep Consultants (APSC), helping support the professional growth and advancement of sleep consultants worldwide.
2013
The Holistic Pre- and Postnatal Nutrition Coach Certification program was launched, reflecting the growing recognition of nutrition’s role in family health and wellness.
2015
The Integrative Adult Sleep Coach Certification program was launched, expanding holistic sleep education beyond child and family sleep into adult sleep health and wellness.
2019
The International Maternity Institute officially evolved into the International Parenting & Health Institute (IPHI), reflecting the organization’s expanding educational offerings and broader mission of serving professionals supporting children, adults, and families across the lifespan.
2025
The Holistic Children & Teen Sleep Coach Certification program was launched, expanding holistic sleep education to address the unique sleep challenges experienced during childhood, adolescence, and the teenage years. The curriculum extended beyond traditional sleep hygiene education to explore factors such as emotional well-being, self-esteem, bullying, technology use, social media influences, pornography exposure, academic pressures, family dynamics, mental health, lifestyle habits, and adolescent development, reflecting a comprehensive whole-person approach to sleep support.
IPHI has trained and supported over 4,000 professionals in more than 72 countries and continues to provide education in parenting, sleep, health, wellness, nutrition, and professional coaching.
Continuing the Evolution of Holistic Sleep Education
Today, the field of holistic sleep education continues to evolve. The development of holistic and integrative educational models reflects a growing recognition that sleep is influenced by numerous interconnected factors and that effective sleep support often benefits from a multidisciplinary perspective.
As sleep science, health education, wellness coaching, lifestyle medicine, nutrition, mental health research, and nervous system regulation continue to advance, holistic sleep consultant education is likely to evolve alongside them.
The future of sleep education will likely involve even greater integration of scientific research, whole-person wellness, family-centered care, individualized support, and multidisciplinary approaches to helping children, adults, and families achieve healthy sleep.
The history of holistic sleep consultant education reflects a growing understanding that sleep is not simply a nighttime behavior, but rather an essential component of overall health, development, well-being, and quality of life.
