Bridging Early Childhood Education, Emotional Development & Holistic Family Sleep

Pam Larouche, Holistic Pregnancy & Child Sleep ConsultantMeet Pamela “Pam” Larouche, Early Childhood Educator, Holistic Infant and Child Sleep Consultant, parent coach, postnatal doula, co-founder of Restful Parenting, mother of four, and graduate of the International Parenting & Health Institute’s Holistic Pregnancy & Child Sleep Consultant Certification Program.

Based in North Bay, Ontario, Canada, Pam has spent more than a decade helping families understand something that sits at the heart of holistic sleep support:

Sleep is rarely only about sleep.

A child’s development matters.

Their temperament matters.

Their emotions matter.

Their environment matters.

Attachment and relationships matter.

Feeding and nutrition may matter.

And the beliefs, needs and parenting style of the family surrounding that child matter, too.

That philosophy has become central to the work Pam and her longtime professional partner Elisa provide through Restful Parenting, where they support families from the prenatal period through the school-age years with sleep, parenting, development and the many challenges that can arise along the way.

But Pam’s understanding of children began long before she became a sleep consultant.

Beginning With Early Childhood Education

Pam’s professional foundation is in Early Childhood Education.

She attended Algonquin College of Applied Arts and Technology from 1998–2000, completing a two-year diploma in Early Childhood Education. Her LinkedIn continues to identify Algonquin College as her educational foundation.

That background matters enormously when considering the work she does today.

Sleep doesn’t develop separately from the child.

Babies become toddlers.

Toddlers test boundaries.

Children experience enormous cognitive, physical, social and emotional changes.

And behaviors that appear to be “sleep problems” may sometimes be connected to something happening elsewhere in a child’s development or environment.

Pam and Elisa explain that their years working in childcare allowed them to witness firsthand the effects insufficient sleep could have on children. When healthier sleep habits were established, they observed meaningful changes in children’s everyday interactions.

Those experiences eventually helped lead Pam toward sleep professionally.

From Early Childhood Educator to Holistic Sleep Consultant

In 2014, Pam co-founded Restful Parenting and began working professionally as a Holistic Infant and Child Sleep Consultant.

Her professional education included the Maternity, Infant and Child Sleep Consultant certification through the International Maternity and Parenting Institute, the earlier name associated with today’s International Parenting & Health Institute. Her LinkedIn now identifies the credential directly with the International Parenting & Health Institute.

Today, we recognize Pam as a graduate of IPHI’s Holistic Pregnancy & Child Sleep Consultant Certification Program.

And more than a decade later, the holistic principles underlying that education remain clearly visible throughout her work.

Restful Parenting describes its approach with a statement that beautifully summarizes that philosophy:

Sleep is not only about sleep.

Looking Beyond the Sleep Challenge

Rather than assuming that every child experiencing disrupted sleep needs the same intervention, Restful Parenting looks at the contributing factors surrounding the challenge.

Pam and Elisa describe their work as both holistic and emotional-based, with programs individually customized around the child, family goals and parenting style.

That distinction is important.

Two children can wake at the same time every night for entirely different reasons.

Two families can have the same sleep goal while needing completely different paths toward it.

And two parents may feel very differently about the strategies they’re comfortable using.

For Pam, understanding those differences is part of understanding sleep.

Her work brings together sleep knowledge with her extensive background in child development, allowing her to look beyond what a child is doing and consider what may be happening underneath it.

Supporting the Child’s Emotions

Another distinctive part of Restful Parenting’s current approach is its emphasis on children’s emotional needs.

Their sleep philosophy explicitly encourages parents to respond to their children as needed and emphasizes helping families understand and support the emotions their child may experience during changes surrounding sleep.

Restful Parenting supports a wide variety of family choices, including:

Co-sleeping.
Bed sharing.
Independent sleep.
Babywearing.
Pacifier use.
Attachment.
Night feeding.
Night weaning.
Breastfeeding.
Formula feeding.

Rather than requiring families to fit themselves into one predetermined parenting philosophy, Pam’s work recognizes that different families make different choices.

The goal is to create support around the family, not force the family around the support.

Sleep and Parenting Go Hand in Hand

Over the years, Pam’s work has expanded beyond sleep consultation alone.

Today, Pam and Elisa describe themselves as holistic infant and child sleep consultants, parent coaches, Early Childhood Educators and postnatal doulas, supporting families from the prenatal stage through school age.

Restful Parenting now intentionally integrates sleep and parenting support.

Their programs may address challenges such as:

That evolution makes sense.

A toddler doesn’t stop developing emotionally because the clock says bedtime.

Parent-child relationships don’t disappear when the lights go out.

And sleep challenges may occur alongside transitions, behavioral concerns, feeding issues or other changes within family life.

As Restful Parenting explains:

Sleep and parenting go hand in hand.

More Than a Decade of Restful Parenting

Pam has now spent approximately 12 years building Restful Parenting.

What began as sleep-focused work has evolved into a broader family-support model incorporating sleep, parenting, development and emotional wellbeing.

Today, Pam serves families in the Northern Ontario region for in-person services while virtual services make support available to families much farther away.

Restful Parenting also provides prenatal/newborn, baby and toddler sleep packages, longer-term sleep and parenting programs, virtual education, classes, a blog and the All Things Sleep and Parenting community. Pam and Elisa also host a podcast focused on sleep and parenting.

This educational component has allowed Pam’s experience to reach beyond individual consultations.

Building Collaborative Family Support

Restful Parenting’s work has continued evolving in another important way: collaboration.

The practice now partners with Jennifer Taun, MSW, RSW, who provides professional consultation and supervision for Pam and Elisa and can become involved directly with mutual clients when appropriate. Jennifer’s background includes child and family mental health, trauma-informed practice, ADHD, neurodiversity, play-based interventions and emotional regulation.

That collaborative structure reflects another important aspect of holistic care.

Being holistic doesn’t mean one professional attempts to address everything.

Sometimes it means recognizing the limits of one’s own scope and knowing when another qualified professional should become part of the family’s support system.

More Than Sleep

Perhaps the clearest thread running through Pam’s career is her understanding that children need to be seen as whole people.

Her background in Early Childhood Education came first.

Sleep education expanded the lens.

Years of working with parents added another dimension.

And more than a decade of Restful Parenting has continued reinforcing the connection between sleep, development, emotions, parenting and family relationships.

Pam’s own LinkedIn description of her work reflects this approach: she describes working side by side with families and using an emotional-based approach to explore the root causes behind sleep challenges while supporting healthy attachment and bonding.

That is what makes her professional journey such a natural fit for this Graduate Spotlight.

An Inspiration in Holistic Family Support

Pam’s career demonstrates what can happen when professional education continues to grow around a strong foundation.

She began with Early Childhood Education.

She expanded into holistic infant and child sleep.

She developed further education surrounding postpartum care, breastfeeding, parenting and pediatric nutrition.

And over the past 12 years, she has helped build Restful Parenting into a practice where sleep is considered within the much larger reality of raising children.

Yet one principle has remained remarkably consistent:

Understand the child before trying to change the challenge.

Because healthy sleep isn’t simply about what happens overnight.

It’s connected to the child who is developing.

The emotions they are experiencing.

The relationships surrounding them.

The environment they’re living in.

And the family trying to support them.

💙 Congratulations, Pam!
