Supporting Women and Families Through Pregnancy, Birth, Breastfeeding, Sleep, and Respectful Maternity Care
Meet Gyopárka Oprea, licensed midwife, International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), perinatal educator, women’s rights advocate, Vice President of the Romanian Midwives Association, and graduate of the International Parenting & Health Institute’s Holistic Pregnancy & Child Sleep Consultant Certification Program.
Gyopárka has built a deeply interdisciplinary career centered on supporting women, babies, and families throughout pregnancy, birth, breastfeeding, the postpartum period, and early parenthood.
Her work reflects a belief that families deserve more than isolated advice. They deserve compassionate, continuous, evidence-informed care that respects each woman’s voice, protects her rights, and considers the physical and emotional well-being of both parent and child.
As a mother of three, Gyopárka also brings lived experience to her professional work—understanding that pregnancy, childbirth, feeding, sleep, recovery, and parenting are closely connected rather than separate stages of family life. The Romanian Midwives Association identifies her as a licensed midwife, IBCLC lactation consultant, perinatal educator, women’s rights activist, and mother of three.
A Professional Foundation in Midwifery
At the heart of Gyopárka’s work is her profession as a licensed midwife.
Midwifery care extends far beyond attending births. Midwives educate and support women throughout pregnancy, help families prepare for labor and parenthood, provide care during and after birth, encourage informed decision-making, and help mothers navigate the physical and emotional transition into the postpartum period.
Gyopárka’s professional experience has included work connected with the Cluj County Emergency Clinical Hospital in Cluj-Napoca, while her public professional profile also reflects experience in Ireland.
This cross-cultural perspective has given her valuable insight into how maternity systems, midwifery models, birth practices, and family support may differ across countries.
Supporting Breastfeeding as an IBCLC
Gyopárka is also an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, commonly known by the credential IBCLC.
This specialized role complements her midwifery work by allowing her to support mothers and babies with breastfeeding preparation, positioning, milk supply concerns, infant feeding behavior, postpartum transitions, and other lactation challenges.
Her combined background in midwifery and lactation enables her to consider the entire maternal-infant experience, from pregnancy and birth through feeding, bonding, sleep, and early development.
Rather than treating breastfeeding or sleep as isolated issues, her work recognizes how birth experiences, recovery, feeding, infant regulation, parental confidence, and family circumstances may all affect one another.
Leadership in the Romanian Midwives Association
Gyopárka serves as Vice President of the Romanian Midwives Association, an organization dedicated to strengthening the midwifery profession, protecting women’s reproductive-health rights, expanding access to quality care, and educating both healthcare professionals and the public about the essential role of midwives.
The organization promotes interdisciplinary collaboration among midwives, obstetricians, family physicians, community nurses, and other healthcare professionals so that women receive more accessible, coordinated, and person-centered care.
Within this leadership role, Gyopárka is identified as an advocate for women’s rights and for the inclusion of midwives within sexual and reproductive healthcare teams.
Her advocacy reflects an important principle: women deserve access to accurate information, respectful care, professional support, and meaningful participation in decisions concerning their own bodies, pregnancies, and births.
Advancing Midwifery Education and Women’s Rights
Gyopárka’s professional work also includes public speaking, clinical education, and participation in international conferences.
At the 2024 international conference “Manifesto for Midwives and Women’s Rights” in Cluj-Napoca, she co-led a workshop on optimal positions for labor and birth and presented on childbirth in Romania versus Ireland from a midwife’s personal experience.
The conference brought together midwives, physicians, lactation consultants, educators, and advocates to advance professional knowledge while promoting women’s universal access to reproductive healthcare and the right to receive midwifery services.
Her involvement demonstrates that Gyopárka’s work is not limited to individual care. She also contributes to broader conversations about maternity-system improvement, professional collaboration, respectful birth, and women’s rights.
Expanding Her Knowledge Through IPHI
To deepen her ability to support families beyond pregnancy, birth, and breastfeeding, Gyopárka completed the Holistic Pregnancy & Child Sleep Consultant Certification Program through the International Parenting & Health Institute.
Through IPHI’s Holistic Science of Sleep Method™, she expanded her understanding of the many interconnected factors that influence healthy infant and child sleep, including:
- Developmental needs
- Feeding and nutrition
- Pregnancy and birth experiences
- Attachment and emotional security
- Infant and child regulation
- Family relationships
- Parental well-being
- Environmental influences
- Lifestyle and cultural considerations
This holistic education naturally complements her existing professional foundation.
As a midwife, lactation consultant, and perinatal educator, Gyopárka already understood that the experiences surrounding pregnancy, birth, recovery, feeding, and bonding can shape family well-being. Her sleep education added another important dimension, allowing her to view sleep as part of the complete maternal-child health continuum.
Connecting Birth, Breastfeeding, and Sleep
One of Gyopárka’s greatest professional strengths is her ability to connect areas that families are often encouraged to address separately.
A baby’s sleep may be influenced by feeding, development, physical comfort, birth history, temperament, sensory needs, attachment, parental stress, and the family environment.
A mother’s ability to rest may be affected by physical recovery, breastfeeding, emotional well-being, available support, and the expectations placed upon her.
Gyopárka’s multidisciplinary education allows her to look beyond a single bedtime concern and consider the needs of the whole family.
Her approach reinforces that supporting sleep is not simply about changing a baby’s behavior. It is about understanding the broader circumstances affecting the baby, the mother, and the family as a connected system.
Perinatal Education and Parent Empowerment
As a perinatal educator, Gyopárka helps parents prepare for pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding, recovery, and life with a newborn.
Education can transform how families experience these transitions. When parents understand what may happen, what choices are available, and where to seek qualified support, they are better equipped to participate confidently in their care.
Gyopárka’s work supports parents in developing that confidence while encouraging collaboration between families and healthcare professionals.
Rather than positioning professionals as the sole decision-makers, her approach values informed partnership, compassionate communication, and respect for each family’s circumstances.
An Advocate for Respectful, Family-Centered Care
Gyopárka’s career reflects a clear commitment to respectful maternity and family care.
Whether she is supporting a mother during pregnancy, helping a family navigate breastfeeding, educating parents about sleep, speaking at a professional conference, or advocating for women’s reproductive rights, her work centers on dignity, empathy, and informed choice.
Her professional journey demonstrates how midwifery, lactation, perinatal education, advocacy, and holistic sleep support can work together to create a more complete model of care for women and families.
An Inspiration for Future Holistic Sleep Consultants
Gyopárka’s work is a powerful example of how holistic sleep education can enhance an already established maternal-child health profession.
Her IPHI certification did not replace her identity as a midwife, lactation consultant, educator, or advocate. It expanded the range of knowledge she can draw upon when supporting families.
Her journey shows future sleep consultants that sleep can be integrated meaningfully into many fields, including:
- Midwifery
- Lactation support
- Perinatal education
- Maternal health
- Reproductive-health advocacy
- Postpartum care
- Family education
It also demonstrates the value of professionals working collaboratively rather than in isolation.
