Bridging pediatric medicine, family wellbeing, holistic sleep support & healthcare innovation

Dr. Sayoko ShiraiMeet Dr. Sayoko Shirai, MD, a board-certified pediatrician, practicing physician, healthcare and life sciences consultant, and graduate of IPHI’s Holistic Pregnancy & Child Sleep Consultant Certification Program.

With more than a decade of clinical experience, Dr. Shirai has built a multidisciplinary career spanning pediatrics, neonatal and pediatric care, medical consultation, medical writing, academic education, digital health, and healthcare innovation.

Today, she is also a consultant at Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu LLC in Japan, where her work spans healthcare and life sciences. In this role, she supports initiatives involving digital transformation, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence adoption, and strategic innovation, with a focus on improving healthcare delivery and diagnostic outcomes.

Dr. Shirai brings an extensive medical background spanning pediatrics, neonatal and pediatric care, medical consultation, healthcare education, academic presentations, medical writing, and healthcare consulting. Her career reflects a commitment not only to treating illness, but also to understanding the broader circumstances that influence the health and wellbeing of children and families.

A Career Rooted in Pediatric Medicine

Dr. Shirai began her postgraduate medical training as a junior resident at Kameda General Hospital before advancing through pediatric residency training.

Her experience includes serving as a senior resident in pediatrics at Kawakita General Hospital as well as pediatric training at St. Luke’s Hospital, where her experience specifically included neonatology and pediatric oncology.

She later served as a pediatrician for a nursery school, conducting medical examinations for children, and has worked across clinical medicine, online medical consultation, medical education, and healthcare consulting.

Dr. Shirai is a board-certified pediatrician through the Japan Pediatric Society and holds a medical license through Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare.

Her additional training has included Neonatal CPR as well as a Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Provider credential.

Extending Pediatric Care Beyond the Clinical Setting

Dr. Shirai’s professional work has extended well beyond traditional clinical practice.

Her background includes leadership in online medical consultation, where she led a quality control team handling more than 7,000 online medical consultations per month, according to her professional profile.

She has also delivered medical seminars, participated as a lead speaker in academic presentations, contributed to research and professional discussions involving pediatric and online healthcare, and worked as a medical writer.

Her scholarly and educational work has included co-authoring a medical book, providing medical supervision for educational material related to the human body and children, and serving as lead author of a medical article examining the role of pediatricians in child-protection efforts.

Today, her work also extends into healthcare and business strategy, reflecting a career that bridges frontline medicine with broader healthcare innovation.

Expanding Her Perspective Through Holistic Sleep Education

Despite already possessing extensive medical training, Dr. Shirai chose to broaden her education by studying the multidimensional influences surrounding sleep and family wellbeing.

She completed IPHI’s Holistic Pregnancy & Child Sleep Consultant Certification, with her IPHI credential issued in December 2018.

Her decision to pursue holistic sleep education illustrates an important principle: sleep does not exist independently of the rest of a child’s life.

Sleep can intersect with physical health, development, environment, family dynamics, parental wellbeing, emotional experiences, routines, nutrition, and many other influences.

For professionals already working in healthcare, understanding these interconnected factors can provide an additional framework for looking at the child and family as a whole.

In Her Own Words

Reflecting on her experience with IPHI, Dr. Shirai shared:

“I took the IPHI Holistic Pregnancy and Infant Sleep Consultant Qualification Course and it prepared me during medical examinations to confidently support moms and outpatients who are suffering from sleep.”

She also explained that the training influenced the way she thought about supporting her own child’s sleep environment and reinforced a broader perspective she continues to carry into her work:

“There are different ways to support each child and family,” and “the happiness of parents affects the child.”

Her reflections capture something central to IPHI’s holistic philosophy: there is no single child, parent, family, or circumstance that can be understood through one isolated factor.

Bridging Pediatrics, Family Health and Sleep

Dr. Shirai’s career demonstrates how professionals can continue expanding their knowledge even after years of rigorous medical education and clinical experience.

Her work has moved across pediatric medicine, neonatal care, family health, medical consultation, academic education, medical writing, and healthcare strategy—while maintaining an interest in how professionals can better support children and the people caring for them.

Her background also represents the type of interdisciplinary thinking that IPHI has championed since its founding: understanding sleep as part of a much larger biological, emotional, environmental, developmental, and family system.

From Frontline Medicine to Healthcare Innovation

Dr. Shirai’s professional journey has continued to evolve beyond traditional clinical medicine.

Alongside her work as a practicing physician, she currently serves as a consultant at Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu LLC, working across the healthcare and life sciences sectors.

Her consulting work focuses on areas shaping the future of healthcare, including digital transformation, cybersecurity, AI adoption, and strategic innovation. Through this work, she helps support efforts to improve healthcare delivery and diagnostic outcomes.

Her LinkedIn summarizes this intersection particularly well: she describes herself as a physician serving as a bridge between frontline healthcare and business strategy.

This makes her professional trajectory especially distinctive. Her experience encompasses direct pediatric care and family health while also extending into the larger systems, technologies, and strategies influencing how healthcare is delivered.
