From Baby Planning to Birth Advocacy: Supporting Families Across the Perinatal Journey
Meet Adriana Lozada, a Certified Advanced Birth Doula, perinatal educator, sleep consultant, bestselling author, international speaker, birth advocate, and creator and host of the acclaimed Birthful podcast.
With more than 19 years of experience, Adriana has built a multidimensional career dedicated to helping expecting and new parents navigate pregnancy, birth, postpartum, newborn life, sleep, and the transition into parenthood with greater knowledge, confidence, and ownership.
Her perspective has also been shaped by an extraordinarily multicultural life. Originally from Venezuela, Adriana has lived in Venezuela, Japan, Canada, Germany, Brazil, and the United States—as well as on a sailboat.
Before entering the perinatal field, Adriana was the co-founder and Chief Content Officer of Spanish-language youth media companies.
Then the birth of her daughter changed the direction of her professional life.
Motherhood sparked Adriana’s passion for becoming a perinatal advocate, ultimately leading her into birth support, education, sleep, writing, speaking, and advocacy.
Adriana is also a longtime graduate of the International Parenting & Health Institute, having completed three IPHI certification programs:
Baby Planner Certification
Eco-Consultant Certification
Holistic Pregnancy & Child Sleep Consultant Certification
Today, through Birthful, Adriana brings together nearly two decades of experience with a clear mission: challenging commonly used, externally focused approaches to birth and advocating for models that better support birth physiology and promote birth ownership.
Her journey demonstrates how professional education, lived experience, communication, and advocacy can evolve into a body of work uniquely one’s own.
From Media to Perinatal Advocacy
Before birth became her professional world, Adriana had already established herself in media and entrepreneurship.
She was a co-founder and Chief Content Officer of Spanish-language youth media companies, bringing together communication, content development, entrepreneurship, and storytelling.
Her work in the emerging digital-media world also earned recognition when she was named one of CNN en Español’s 20 Latin American Leaders of the Internet in 2000.
Then Adriana became a mother.
The birth of her daughter became a defining turning point, sparking a passion for pregnancy, birth, postpartum, and the experiences of families navigating the transition into parenthood.
What began as a personal transformation gradually became a new professional direction.
But in many ways, Adriana never abandoned her first career.
She transformed it.
The communication, interviewing, storytelling, and content-development skills she developed in media would eventually become powerful tools for perinatal education—and later form an important foundation for Birthful.
Building a Multidimensional Foundation in Family Support
Adriana began professionally supporting families in the birth field in 2007.
As her work with expecting and new parents developed, she continued expanding her education beyond birth itself.
Through IPHI, Adriana completed the Baby Planner Certification Program, adding another layer to her understanding of how families prepare practically, emotionally, and logistically for the arrival of a baby.
She later completed the Eco-Consultant Certification Program, expanding her education into environmental considerations surrounding pregnancy, babies, families, and the home.
Adriana also became a graduate of IPHI’s Holistic Pregnancy & Child Sleep Consultant Certification Program, adding sleep to an increasingly comprehensive understanding of the perinatal and early-parenting experience.
These areas may initially seem separate:
Pregnancy.
Birth.
Baby planning.
Environment.
Postpartum.
Newborn care.
Sleep.
Yet for families moving through the transition into parenthood, they constantly intersect.
Adriana’s multidisciplinary professional development reflected an understanding that would continue to characterize her work: families rarely experience pregnancy, birth, postpartum, or parenting as isolated events.
Birthful: Informing Intuition
In 2014, Adriana launched what would become one of the defining projects of her professional career:
The Birthful Podcast.
Through Birthful, Adriana has created an extensive educational platform exploring pregnancy, birth, postpartum, newborn life, breastfeeding, parenting, physiology, maternal health, and the transition into parenthood.
Over the years, she has interviewed hundreds of professionals and parents, using thoughtful long-form conversations to explore the complexity of the perinatal experience.
A central philosophy behind her work is captured in a phrase Adriana uses throughout Birthful:
“Inform your intuition.”
Information matters.
Evidence matters.
Professional expertise matters.
But Adriana’s work also recognizes that parents are not simply passive recipients of information or instructions.
They bring their own bodies, values, circumstances, cultures, histories, preferences, and intuition into their experiences.
Her work encourages expecting and new parents to become more informed participants in the decisions surrounding pregnancy, birth, postpartum, and parenting.
Challenging the Conventional Birth Model
As Adriana’s work has evolved, birth physiology and birth ownership have become increasingly central to her professional mission.
As a speaker and birth advocate, Adriana seeks to dismantle what she describes as a commonly used, externally focused birth model, replacing it with a framework that more effectively supports birth physiology while promoting greater ownership by the person giving birth.
This distinction is important.
Birth preparation can sometimes become heavily focused on what is happening around the birthing person:
What will the provider do?
What will happen at the hospital?
What intervention might come next?
What does the monitor say?
What does someone else believe should happen?
Adriana’s work encourages expecting parents to also turn their attention inward—to understand birth physiology, become familiar with their options, ask meaningful questions, and recognize their own role within the experience.
Birth ownership does not mean controlling birth.
Birth can be unpredictable, and circumstances can change.
Instead, ownership can mean remaining informed, asking questions, participating in decisions, communicating preferences, and remaining connected to one’s experience even when plans need to evolve.
Her work is therefore not centered on prescribing one “right” type of birth.
It is centered on supporting a model in which the person giving birth remains an informed and active participant.
Supporting Birth Physiology
Understanding physiology is another major component of Adriana’s work.
Rather than viewing birth solely through procedures or interventions, she encourages parents to better understand what the body is attempting to accomplish during labor and birth.
This includes exploring how environment, movement, positioning, hormones, emotional safety, support, and the birthing person’s experience can interact with physiological processes.
For Adriana, understanding physiology is not about rejecting medical care.
It is about helping parents develop a more complete understanding of birth so they can communicate effectively with their healthcare team and participate more meaningfully in their experience.
That distinction reflects a theme found throughout Adriana’s professional work:
Education can create agency.
Preparing Families Beyond Birth
Adriana’s work does not end once a baby is born.
As a perinatal and postpartum educator, she has also placed significant emphasis on preparing families for the realities of the fourth trimester and newborn life.
Pregnancy receives enormous attention.
Birth receives enormous attention.
Yet families may spend considerably less time preparing for what happens after they return home with their baby.
Postpartum recovery, feeding, newborn biological needs, sleep, relationships, identity, emotional adjustment, parental expectations, and support systems all become part of the transition.
Adriana’s broader professional background allows her to view this period as more than simply newborn care.
It is a transformation affecting the entire family.
Sleep as Part of the Perinatal Picture
Sleep has also been part of Adriana’s professional foundation through her education as a Holistic Pregnancy & Child Sleep Consultant.
Sleep during the perinatal period cannot always be separated from everything else happening within a family.
Pregnancy itself can dramatically alter sleep.
Postpartum recovery often occurs alongside fragmented parental sleep.
Newborn sleep interacts with feeding, development, environment, family rhythms, parental expectations, and physical and emotional recovery.
As babies grow, sleep continues evolving alongside development.
Adriana’s multidisciplinary education allows sleep to be viewed within this larger picture rather than as an isolated nighttime behavior.
It is another component of the interconnected experience of pregnancy, postpartum, infancy, and family life.
A Multicultural Perspective on Pregnancy, Birth & Parenthood
Adriana’s perspective has also been shaped by a life lived across cultures.
Her background is, in her own words, a “multi-layered and multi-cultural tapestry of adventure.”
From **Venezuela to Japan, Canada, Germany, Brazil, and the United States—and even a period of life aboard a sailboat—**Adriana has experienced communities, cultures, and ways of living extending far beyond a single geographic framework.
That perspective has particular relevance in perinatal work.
Pregnancy, birth, postpartum, and parenting do not happen within a cultural vacuum.
Beliefs about childbirth, relationships with healthcare systems, family involvement, postpartum traditions, infant care, feeding, sleep, and expectations surrounding motherhood and parenthood can vary enormously.
Adriana’s international life experience adds another dimension to a professional philosophy that resists rigid, one-size-fits-all thinking.
Bringing Media and Maternity Full Circle
One of the most interesting aspects of Adriana’s journey is how her first and second professional worlds eventually came together.
The skills developed during her years in media—communication, interviewing, storytelling, content creation, and entrepreneurship, became highly relevant to her work as a perinatal educator.
Birthful ultimately brought those two worlds together.
Through podcasting, education, speaking, and digital media, Adriana has been able to translate complex conversations surrounding pregnancy, birth, postpartum, and parenting into information families can understand and use.
The subject changed.
The audience changed.
The mission deepened.
But the storyteller remained.
Author, Speaker & Advocate
Adriana’s educational work has expanded beyond podcasting.
She is also a bestselling author and international speaker, bringing conversations about birth physiology, birth ownership, postpartum preparation, and perinatal advocacy to broader audiences.
She co-authored the Spanish-language book Soy de Pura Madre, whose first edition sold out within three months and whose digital edition became an Amazon #1 bestseller.
Through speaking and advocacy, Adriana continues challenging assumptions about how expecting parents are prepared for birth and how authority is distributed within the birth experience.
Her work asks a larger question:
How can we provide families with information and support without disconnecting them from their own bodies, voices, intuition, and decision-making?
19+ Years of Supporting Families
What began with the birth of Adriana’s daughter has now evolved into more than 19 years of professional experience.
Over those years, Adriana has become a birth doula, perinatal educator, sleep consultant, author, speaker, advocate, podcast host, and trusted voice within the birth community.
She has also demonstrated how a professional journey does not need to remain confined to the title with which it began.
Her IPHI education in Baby Planning, Eco-Consulting, and Holistic Pregnancy & Child Sleep became part of a much larger professional foundation.
Her media background became a platform for education.
Her experience of motherhood became a catalyst for advocacy.
And her years supporting families became a mission centered on birth physiology, informed decision-making, and birth ownership.
Nearly two decades later, Adriana continues encouraging parents not simply to accumulate more information—but to use that information to become more connected to their own experiences.
To, as Birthful so beautifully puts it:
Inform their intuition.
