Bridging Clinical Neurophysiology, Neuroscience, Behavioral Sleep Care, Mindfulness, and Holistic Sleep Education
Meet Dr. Olga Judith Hernández-Fustes, physician and clinical neurophysiologist, sleep medicine professional, Integrative Adult Sleep Coach, and graduate of the International Parenting & Health Institute’s Integrative Adult Sleep Coach Certification Program.
Today, Dr. Olga has brought that journey full circle: she also serves as an instructor for IPHI’s Integrative Adult Sleep Coach Certification Program in Spanish, helping prepare the next generation of Spanish-speaking sleep professionals.
Her career spans more than three decades and crosses several countries, disciplines, and approaches to sleep health. From her medical education in Cuba to advanced neuroscience studies in Spain and decades of clinical practice in Brazil, Dr. Olga has devoted her professional life to understanding the nervous system and helping people achieve healthier, more restorative sleep.
Her own words beautifully summarize that calling:
Helping people sleep is her dream and her mission.
From Medicine to Clinical Neurophysiology
Dr. Olga graduated in medicine from the University of Havana in Cuba in 1990 and pursued specialized training in neurophysiology.
After completing her residency, she relocated to Curitiba, Brazil, in 1994, where she would eventually establish her clinical practice and build a career serving individuals with neurological and sleep-related concerns. Her current practice identifies her as a medical neurophysiologist and provides specialized evaluations in both neurophysiology and sleep medicine.
Clinical neurophysiology examines the functioning of the nervous system through specialized testing and physiological measurement. That foundation gave Dr. Olga a particularly sophisticated perspective on sleep because sleep itself is deeply intertwined with brain activity, neurological function, circadian regulation, breathing, movement, and overall health.
Discovering a Passion for Sleep Medicine
In 1996, Dr. Olga received a scholarship to continue her education in Spain, where she studied Neuroscience at the Autonomous University of Barcelona.
During doctoral-level studies and an internship at Vall d’Hebron Hospital, she developed a particular fascination with sleep medicine. She returned to Curitiba in 1997 and revalidated her clinical neurophysiology qualification there.
What began as an area of academic interest ultimately became one of the defining passions of her career.
She continued expanding her education through postgraduate study, including a master’s degree completed in Seville, training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, a diploma in Sleep Medicine through the Brazilian Sleep Society, and specialized study in mindfulness for insomnia.
Complete Clinical Sleep Care
Today, Dr. Olga’s work brings together clinical neurophysiology and sleep medicine through comprehensive assessment and care.
Her practice provides specialized testing that includes:
- Actigraphy, used to monitor sleep-wake patterns and activity over extended periods
- Polysomnography, an overnight sleep study evaluating physiological functions including breathing, heart rate, eye movements, and brain activity
- Electroneuromyography (ENMG), used to evaluate nerve and muscle function and investigate neuromuscular concerns
Her clinic uses these diagnostic tools to evaluate sleep disorders, neurological conditions, neuromuscular disorders, and other factors that may interfere with healthy nighttime rest.
That clinical foundation makes her perspective on sleep particularly comprehensive: she understands both the physiological assessment of sleep disorders and the behavioral, psychological, and lifestyle influences that affect how people sleep.
Expanding Into Behavioral and Integrative Sleep Care
Despite already having extensive education in medicine, neuroscience, neurophysiology, sleep medicine, and behavioral approaches, Dr. Olga continued looking for ways to broaden how she supports people experiencing sleep challenges.
That commitment to lifelong learning led her to the International Parenting & Health Institute’s Integrative Adult Sleep Coach Certification Program.
Through IPHI, she expanded her knowledge of the Holistic Science of Sleep Method™, exploring the many interconnected influences on restorative sleep beyond diagnosis alone.
These include areas such as:
- Circadian health
- Nutrition
- Stress physiology
- Emotional well-being
- Lifestyle patterns
- Movement
- Sleep environment
- Mindset and behavior change
- Nervous system regulation
- Whole-person wellness
For a physician already deeply immersed in sleep medicine, this integrative education provided another lens through which to understand the lived experience of sleep and the lifestyle factors that may influence it.
Bridging Medicine and Coaching
Dr. Olga’s career beautifully illustrates that clinical sleep medicine and sleep coaching do not need to compete with one another.
They serve different but potentially complementary purposes.
Medical evaluation and diagnostic testing are essential when sleep disorders or other health conditions are suspected. Coaching and education can help people understand and address the daily habits, environmental factors, emotional patterns, and lifestyle influences that affect sleep.
Dr. Olga’s background enables her to understand both worlds.
Her practice combines extensive medical expertise with education in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, mindfulness for insomnia, and integrative adult sleep coaching, creating a broad framework for understanding the complexity of sleep.
An Educator Committed to Lifelong Learning
Dr. Olga describes studying as her greatest hobby, and her professional journey reflects that philosophy.
More than three decades after graduating from medical school, she continues seeking new knowledge and new ways to help people.
Her education has taken her across Cuba, Spain, Brazil, and the United States, spanning medicine, neuroscience, clinical neurophysiology, sleep medicine, behavioral therapy, mindfulness, and integrative sleep science.
And today, she is no longer only learning.
She is teaching.
As an instructor for IPHI’s Spanish-language Integrative Adult Sleep Coach Certification Program, Dr. Olga now shares her clinical experience and extensive knowledge with professionals seeking to deepen their own understanding of adult sleep.
This progression—from student, to graduate, to instructor—is something we are especially proud to celebrate.
Advancing Sleep Education in Spanish
Access to high-quality professional sleep education in Spanish remains important for expanding the global reach of evidence-informed and holistic sleep support.
Dr. Olga brings something particularly valuable to IPHI’s Spanish program: decades of medical and clinical sleep experience combined with an understanding of integrative coaching principles.
Her leadership gives Spanish-speaking students the opportunity to learn from a physician who has devoted much of her professional life to neuroscience and sleep.
Through her teaching, her influence now extends beyond the patients she personally serves to the future clients and communities reached by the professionals she educates.
Educating the Public About Sleep
Dr. Olga also continues to make sleep education accessible to the public through her professional platform and educational content.
Her website features resources addressing topics such as insomnia, anxiety and sleep, restorative sleep, medications used in insomnia care, metabolic health, and other emerging topics in adult sleep medicine.
This commitment to education reinforces an important theme throughout her career: helping people better understand their own health so they can seek appropriate care and make informed choices.
