Sleep training approaches sleep from a behavioral perspective, that is usually child centered focused whether it is a parent-led sleep training approach or baby-led (gentle) sleep training approach. Our holistic science of sleep method approach on the other hand is team centered focused approach that supports parents needs as much as the child’s needs and in fact connects parents behaviors and lifestyles with their child’s. A child sleep challenge is a family sleep challenge that involves thoroughly evaluating and supporting the entire family which sleep training methods are not designed to do.
Sleep training methods often overlook the whole picture, including pregnancy experience, birth experience, postpartum experience, work-life management, relationships and connections, child development, child psychology, support and physical/mental health of everyone in the family.
While sleep training methods focus on behavior strategies to meet sleep needs, our Holistic Science of Sleep Method focuses on health and lifestyle strategies that influence behavior leading to optimal sleep.
Rather than choosing a baby led vs parent led approach, we support a team led approach that addresses and supports everyone’s needs in the entire family dynamic.
Introducing the first developed, launched and one of its’ kind Holistic Approach to Child Sleep that Begins Before Baby is Born based on our founder Mar De Carlo’s Holistic Science of Sleep Method and book “Awakening Through Sleep.”
“Our children’s bodies do not need to technically be “trained” to sleep. By nature’s design, human bodies are already programmed to sleep and will do so if we support the process. Our job is to find out what is getting in the way.” ~ Mar De Carlo
Children go through various stages of sleep development similarly to walking, eating, talking etc…and most often there are many health and lifestyle factors, in addition to unrealistic expectations parents are unaware of getting in the way sleep.”
The HSS Method does not believe in a “one size fits all” or “sleep training” approach to sleep consulting. Instead we use what our founder Mar has coined as “Sleep Optimizing” strategies to thoroughly investigate and address imbalances in optimal human function (physical, mental, emotional) and external forces (social, cultural, environmental) that inhibit sleep and may lead to adult and child sleep challenges during pregnancy, parenting during infancy and beyond.
By examining the entire context for sleep – the physical, emotional, social, developmental and environmental factors – we address the sleep needs for the family with a minimum of frustration for both parents and children and teach our sleep consultants not only to understand the natural factors that regulate and influence sleep through a child’s various stages of development but also learning from the child. Often parents and professionals rely so heavily and get hyper focused on books and rigid methods that they overlook what their child is teaching them about sleep. The child is also a book that is providing us information we must consistently learn from. Children teach and guide us just as much as we do them. We just have to tune in.

After having launched the first Baby Planner program in 2009, Mar De Carlo, the founder of IPHI, was provided an opportunity to evaluate and contribute to the profession of child sleep consulting in 2011. She noticed that a holistic child sleep consultant professional training program had not existed and also recognized that there were a large number of child sleep consultants who were using one size-fits all sleep training methods that did not leave much room for parents to have options. She also noticed that pregnancy sleep support and the child sleep education, prior to birth, was not being taught to child sleep consultants in addition to various vital subjects that affect sleep like birth psychology, birth trauma, emotional well-being, emotional abuse, cultural and religious differences, special needs, sleep-based nutrition for mom and baby, conscious parenting, yoga nidra and much more.
As a result, in 2012, Mar was the first in the child sleep consultant industry to pioneer a holistic approach that began during pregnancy and included all of the subjects and missing pieces, mentioned above. Mar felt that by introducing her holistic approach, it would raise the bar and level of awareness for child sleep consultants, inspire them to begin working during pregnancy and also motivate them to reformulate their traditional use of sleep training to a customizable holistic approach that involves a thorough investigative process honoring each family’s unique needs, including evaluating and supporting parents physical and emotional well-being and where traditional and rigid forms of sleep training they were once using, were no longer the limiting standard.
In 2012, Mar launched the first Pregnancy & Child Sleep Certification program via IPHI, a holistic team-based approach and also founded the Association or Professional Sleep Consultants to provide a platform and space for sleep consultants from various backgrounds to connect, learn, grow and receive support. The program was received well and grew very quickly.
In 2015, Mar re-evaluated how her holistic approach was being implemented and applied by IPHI’s graduates and learned that while the majority of sleep consultants were implementing and utilizing her holistic approach properly, a minority were utilizing it improperly with rigid sleep training methods which created some confusion. In that same year, Mar addressed this challenge by deciding to write her book, “Awakening Through Sleep: a transformational and spiritual guide to pregnancy, adult and child sleep” in order to publicly document her holistic approach and clarify her message and expand her mission.
During 2015, Mar also began re-examining the accuracy and benefits of continuing to use the term “sleep training” as while the term can represent many different approaches to child sleep from “cry it out”, to “no cry” and everything in between, the term continued to carry a very negative and controversial perspective among professionals and parents which divided them and just as importantly did not accurately represent Mar’s pure holistic approach which does not require any traditional form of sleep training. Therefore, in the years that followed, Mar introduced updated measures, policies and upgraded content for IPHI’s Pregnancy & Child Sleep Consultant program (125 hours) to ensure that her holistic approach was not being misused by professionals or boxed in with the confusing various limiting perspectives of “sleep training”.
Besides the significant contributions Mar has made to the child sleep consulting industry with her holistic science of sleep method approach, it is important to note that the content included in IPHI’s Pregnancy & Child Sleep Certification program is not made up by Mar on her own. While the Holistic Science of Sleep Method system and formulation are unique to Mar and IPHI, and while Mar has over two decades of extensive professional training and experience which includes over 25 certifications, she along with her team, have compiled a wealth of evidenced based research and science that is not just based on theory but also practical application. During their learning journey, students of the IPHI Pregnancy & Child Sleep Consultant program are guided and mentored through a variety of real-life case studies where they have an opportunity to apply and practice what they learn.
While our program introduces and includes a wealth of reliable and credible information from various experts and resources that tie to pregnancy and child sleep, students learn about the professional world of coaching and how to excel at coaching and consulting. It is one thing to know sleep and it is another to be a successful coach/consultant and business owner. So apart from offering comprehensive evidence-based sleep education, our program also includes comprehensive evidence-based coaching education and business education. Because our founder, Mar also has a diverse professional background and experience, she is able to look at the child sleep industry from different angles always allowing her to bring a new and fresh perspective to our program and students. This is what also gives IPHI an advantage in our curriculum development. Mar never stops learning. She consistently participates in new programs, collaborates and learns from experts, her faculty and continuously updates our program..

The Birth of IPHI
“It was one courageous decision that completely changed my life on August 7 2009.
After arriving in Northern California, as a newly single first time mom with no friends or family close by, I made the decision to turn down a high profile client so I could remain securing my attachment with my daughter. I had $20 left in my bank account and was about to begin living off of credit cards until I figured things out.
The decision to turn down a high profile client led me to dig deep and find a way to provide for myself and my daughter without compromising my time away from her during such a challenging time.
Three days of immense trust, I began meditating and repeating to myself that in every challenge there is an opportunity. On the third day, I received an answer with a clear vision.
Little did I know my challenging personal journey would become my service and contribution to parents, children and professionals who work with them.
The tremendous amount of years I spent studying and training in several fields in addition to a wealth of experience I obtained, expanded to give birth to my International Parenting & Health Institute currently represented in 61 countries.”
Sleep expert Mar De Carlo provides hope for the 50 to 70 million adults who have sleep or wakefulness disorders with her book Awakening Through Sleep, a 40,000-word self-help guide to sleep education.
Sleep disturbances are common during pregnancy, and can be risk factors for a number of serious pregnancy-related sleep disorders. The threat, though, don’t end post birth. Child sleep challenges affect whole families, causing stress, loss of family connection, and trauma. It’s no surprise, then, that sleep deprivation costs $411 billion annually in the United States alone. In Awakening Through Sleep, Mar—founder of the International Parenting & Health Institute and Association of Professional Sleep Consultants—leads readers in understanding the key principles, thinking, and ideas that define a holistic approach to this devastating issue so they can lead enriching lives. Readers will finish the book understanding the roots, science, roadblocks, and benefits of such exploration, with a clear path for how to shape brilliant and bold futures.
Stylized with gentle encouragement designed to instruct and empower, Awakening Through Sleep will appeal to parents and soon-to-be parents; academics, including students; psychotherapists and mental health workers; and curious 21st-century thinkers. As COVID-19 has afforded people worldwide a moment of reflection (and, indeed, amplified the importance of self-care practices), now is an important time for this book.
As the first in the child sleep consultant industry to develop and launch a Holistic Adult and Child Sleep Certification program (2012), Mar specializes in training professionals on sleep education during pregnancy. Her program and approach have met success in 61 countries and are currently represented in 9 languages. She showcases her expertise through individual sessions, workshops, retreats, and speaking engagements, and has been featured and / or quoted in Good Morning America, Los Angeles Times, New York Post, Consumer Reports, MarketWatch, and many other outlets.
Various organizations offer accreditation of schools, however this does not fully guarantee the quality of the program or the successful outcome of the coach. Therefore both theory and practice are included in all of our programs which require a mimimum of 85 and maximum of 1,000 hours of professional training as well as continuous program review and updates; and partcipant surveys and evaluations.
In the United States, coaching isn’t regulated by any state or federal agency. There is no licensing requirement for the various specialized parenting and health coaching professions like there is for medical doctors or therapists. As a result, while we have sought to become accredited through a few organizations, to ensure high professional standards and best practices, all of our professionals follow our code of ethics and scope and boundaries to practice in addition to being required to state up to date with their education via certification renewal every two years.
The International Parenting & Health Institute first went through the American Association of Drugless Practitioners Certification and Accreditation in 2010 in order to reinforce the quality, academic quality, and programatic content design of IPHI’s programs.
